2019: The Year of Self Care

As a mom, I tend to put everyone else before myself. 2018 found me rundown, irritable, lonely, sad, full of anxiety and depression. Friends kept telling me that I need to put myself first but I just kept putting it off. The kids needed something signed, someone needed clean pants, everyone needs to eat all the time. And Mommy kept getting put to the wayside.

2019 is going to be the year of self care. I am going to say "no" a little more and "yes" a little less. I am going to take time to read and write every day; I might finish my novel (fingers crossed). We're joining the YMCA this month. I'm doing a Bible study for myself. I'm going to speak up for myself.

The idea is daunting. To take care of myself first? I have three kids, a husband, a dog, and a house. Putting myself before all of them is going to take some getting used to. But if I don't learn to put myself first, they all aren't going to have me anymore. There were too many thoughts of that last year. I don't like those thoughts. They scare me and they aren't productive.

No more drama. You want to bring drama into my life? Don't let the door hit you on the ass on the way out of my life. You want to start drama about my kids? Don't even bother coming near my family anymore. They might not be perfect, but all three of them are good kids with huge hearts. I'm not going to fight or argue with anyone (except the kids because, who am I kidding? They're going to argue over everything they can 😉) anymore. I don't have the time or the energy. You do you and I will do me.

I'm here for my friends. You need me, call me. Yes, I will actually pick up the phone. Most people know how much I hate talking on the phone, so if you are calling me then I know it is important.

I want to have fun. We have so many adventures planned for our family this year. The aquarium, the zoo (my five year old has never been to the zoo!), the beach, a trip to Georgia, a trip to California. Fun fun fun. Memories memories memories. Laughter and love.

Yes, 2019 is going to be a most excellent year.

To Aiden, On the Night Before You Turn Five

Dear Aiden,

Tomorrow you will be FIVE years old! Five years ago tonight I was praying that everything would go fine the next day and we would have another healthy baby boy. It didn't go exactly as we planned, but the love and joy you have brought into our lives made the journey well worth it.

You are our caboose...Mommy's baby, Daddy's buddy, forever chasing after your sister and brother. You are my last baby to turn five, and it is so bittersweet. Five is a Big Boy, as you informed me the other day. It must be, since you start kindergarten the day after your birthday. You are so smart it blows me away. You are headstrong, sweet, silly, and loving. You love to tell stories (something you inherited from both Daddy and me, but I blame the long windedness on Daddy ;) ). Your laugh is contagious. Your smile warms everyone's heart. Nobody who meets you ever walks away without a new little friend. You love fiercely. You laugh with your whole body. You give the tightest hugs. Five is going to be an amazing year for you.

Tonight, you let me sing you "Hush Little Baby" but you told me it was the last time because "tomorrow is my birthday and I will be five." Apparently that means Mommy doesn't sing to you anymore. But you have to fall asleep sometime, and Mommy might sing to you then.

I love you so much. You're my little shadow, my best little dude. You think I am the best thing in the world and I never want that to change (even though I know it will some day). I know you are very excited to turn five; you have been counting down the days. I hope five is everything you hope it will be.

All my love,

Mommy

Anxiety and Depression and Motherhood

I am a perfectionist. I make lists. I like things to be neat and tidy and in their designated places. I also have a husband and three kids. Those three kids did not inherit one iota of my perfectionism and organization. Not one. Socks end up on the floor. My feet encounter Legos way too often. My husband found a milk cup in the basement yesterday; drinks are not allowed in the basement.

I also have anxiety and depression. Mostly controlled, this summer seemed to be a major trigger for me. Between my therapist cancelling appointments, some financial issues, the kids being home together all day (aside from some day camps), my husband working more, a lot of days of rain, and me finishing up my MA degree, I feel like I have been short fused, tired, frustrated, and longing for a cozy blanket and a good book. And silence. What I wouldn't give for silence in the middle of the day.

But I'm also anxious because I love my kids and I worry about them. My oldest had a hard time during the last school year and isn't looking forward to returning to school for 4th grade. My middle child has had an ADD med dosage change. And my baby is about to go into kindergarten. KINDGERGARTEN. The day after he turns five. Didn't I just have him the other day??

I also completed my MA degree. Every day I feel like I am forgetting to do something. I don't feel like I have extra time because I don't have homework and studying and writing to do. I feel like I should still be doing those things. I don't know where I will be working. On the advice of my therapist, I am taking a few months to deal with the end of school and my baby being in kindergarten. Instead I am organizing my house, taking my kids to camp and the library, running errands, cooking meals, and doing all of the other mothering things that I do every day.

I worry. I keep myself up at night thinking about all of the pieces of my life. Are my kids happy? Is my husband happy? Was I snippy today? Do they know how much I love them? How do I make them understand that I love them, even through the anxiety and depression? Do I show them enough? All of these thoughts, and more, cycle through my head continuously.

And, at my worst, here is my deepest secret: I worry they would all be better off without me. I don't fantasize about ways to kill myself or anything like that (take a deep breath, gentle reader). But I do worry that my anxiety and depression are making me a bad mom and negatively affecting my babies. I worry that they might be better off with no mom rather than a mom who has so many issues.

I lost my mom when I was eighteen, though, and I know how that feels. My best friend lost her mom at six, just one year older than my youngest. I can't do that to my kids. I can't leave them without a mom. But mental illness is evil. Little evil thoughts pervade and I have to fight them off every day. I have to remind myself that I can do this, that I am doing my best, that my kids need ME, and take it one day at a time. Sometimes I take it one hour or one minute at a time.

My best friend told me something that I have since reminded myself of several times a day: my best is good enough. And so is yours.

Today's Car Conversation With Aiden

My youngest likes to talk in the car. A lot. Incessantly. Usually until he passes out mid-sentence. My godmother lives seven minutes from us. He wanted to go visit her this morning after we dropped his sister and brother at school. On the way back home, this was our conversation:

A: It's a nice day. A beautiful day. See all the green leaves. And the black flies. And the clouds. And the birds,

Me: It is a nice day.

A: Was it nice that I wanted to check on Grandma?

M: Yes.

A: What are rocks made out of?

M: Rocks.

A: What is glass made out of?

M: Glass.

A: What are metal pipes made out of?

M: Metal.

A: It would take 60 million days to hammer through a pipe.

M:

A: I don't have any pipe. Or a hammer. Daddy says hammers are not toys.

M: That's right.

A: I wish Grandma would feel better already. Her leg is stubborn.

M: (trying not to laugh)

A: Where are we going now?

M: Home.

A: Oh, that's good. It's been a long day.

In SEVEN minutes. lol

I love this kid.

2018: The Year of Organization

Ah, organization. I am a girl who loves her organization. It's calming. It's soothing. My brain enjoys it.

A friend got me invited to a Facebook group about using planners. Awesome idea! After much thinking and planning, I finally got everything done yesterday. I'm pretty proud of my results, if I do say so myself.

The top binder is my lifeline. It's my calendar, phone number, account number, keeper of all things. I would be lost without it. Ugly crying in the corner kind of lost. I had a 1 inch binder, upgraded to a 1.5 inch, and am thinking I might need a 2 inch. We'll see.

This year, I want to write more, study the Bible more, and be more involved in my church. This is where the second and third binders come in. The second binder is my writing binder. I found writing prompts for every day of the year and put those in there. If I have any other writing ideas, I can add those, too. The third binder is my Bible/church binder, for doing Bible studies and taking notes in church. It's also to keep track of prayer lists and church events.

The bottom binder is our family binder. Emergency information, kids' school information, household information, doctors, maintenance, etc. Everything our family needs.

Here's to a year of organization! Do you have any organizational tips or tricks?

Happy New Year!

"Believe you can and you're halfway there."
- Theodore Roosevelt

2018 is a big year of change for our household: I'll finish my MA this summer and Aiden starts kindergarten at the end of August. There are so many mixed emotions surrounding those two events.

I don't make New Year's resolutions but I decided to make some goals for 2018.

Be more organized.
Do a Bible study and read the Bible aloud to the kids every night.
Work on managing stress.
Write more.
Find a job.
Connect with friends more.

Share if you have any goals for 2018!
